Short answer: yes, it very likely will. Delta-8, delta-9, THCA and HHC all produce metabolites that standard urine drug screens detect. Full-spectrum CBD can produce a positive too. "Hemp-derived" and "federally legal" are legal categories — a laboratory instrument has no way to see them.
This is the single most consequential thing to understand before you buy anything we review, so it is worth more than a one-line answer.

What a drug test is actually looking for
A standard workplace urine screen does not test for THC. It tests for THC-COOH — more precisely 11-nor-9-carboxy-THC, the inactive metabolite your liver produces after processing THC. That metabolite is fat-soluble, which is why it lingers long after any effect has worn off.
Testing happens in two stages. An immunoassay screens the sample cheaply and fast, using antibodies that bind to molecules of a particular shape. If it flags positive, a confirmatory test — usually GC-MS or LC-MS/MS — identifies the specific compound.
Under federal transportation rules at 49 CFR § 40.85, the cutoffs for marijuana metabolites are 50 ng/mL for the initial immunoassay and 15 ng/mL for the confirmatory test. Many private employers use the same thresholds; some use a more sensitive 20 ng/mL screen.
The critical point is in that first stage. An immunoassay recognises a molecular shape, not a legal classification. It cannot tell you where a molecule came from.
Delta-8, delta-10 and HHC: the research is clear
This is the question people ask most, usually hoping the answer is no. It is not.
A 2023 study published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology tested six commercially available urine immunoassays against delta-8-THC, delta-10-THC, CBD, HHC and their metabolites. The findings:
- Delta-8-THC and its metabolites were detected by all six assays. At a 50 ng/mL cutoff they triggered at concentrations of 100–200 ng/mL; at lower 20–25 ng/mL cutoffs, at 50–100 ng/mL.
- HHC carboxylic acid metabolites were detected by all six assays at 30–50 ng/mL — the lowest concentrations in the study, meaning HHC metabolites were among the easiest to detect.
- Delta-10-THC variants cross-reacted with five of the six assays. One assay, from Roche, showed no cross-reactivity even at 1,000 ng/mL — but you have no way of knowing which assay your employer's lab uses.
- CBD itself did not cross-react at any tested concentration. Two minor CBD metabolites showed limited cross-reactivity only at 1,000 ng/mL.
The authors' conclusion was that current immunoassay screening may well detect these newer cannabinoid analogues — meaning a screen generally cannot distinguish delta-8, delta-10 or HHC use from delta-9 THC use.

THCA flower
THCA is the acidic precursor to delta-9 THC. Heat converts it — that is the entire mechanism by which smoking or vaping THCA flower produces effects. Once converted and metabolised, it produces the same THC-COOH as any other THC.
Raw THCA that has not been heated is a different molecule, but nobody consumes THCA flower raw. If you smoke it, you are consuming delta-9 THC, and your urine will reflect that.
Full-spectrum CBD: the case people don't expect
Pure CBD does not cause a positive result. But most CBD products are not pure CBD.
Full-spectrum CBD legally contains up to 0.3% THC. In a 30 mL tincture that can be 15–45 mg of THC across the bottle — small per dose, but it accumulates with daily use.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins demonstrated this directly. Six adults vaped cannabis containing 10.5% CBD and 0.39% THC, delivering roughly 100 mg CBD and 3.7 mg THC in a single session. Two of the six produced positive urine screens for THC-COOH — after one exposure, at a 50 ng/mL screening cutoff with 15 ng/mL confirmation. Neither pure CBD nor the placebo condition produced any positives.
One session. Under four milligrams of THC. A third of participants positive. Daily use of a full-spectrum product compounds that considerably.
There is a second problem: label accuracy. The Department of Transportation's own notice on CBD warns that "the labeling of many CBD products may be misleading because the products could contain higher levels of THC than what the product label states." Independent testing has repeatedly found products containing more THC than declared, and some marketed as THC-free that were not.
This is exactly why we push so hard on batch-matched lab reports. If you are subject to testing and you use CBD, the COA is the only thing standing between you and an unpleasant surprise — and even a clean COA only covers the batch it was run on.

How long it stays detectable
Detection windows vary enormously between people. Body composition, metabolism, dose, potency and frequency all matter, and THC-COOH accumulates in fat tissue, so frequency matters most of all.
Widely cited ranges for urine testing:
- Single use: roughly 3 days
- Occasional use, a few times a week: roughly 5–7 days
- Daily use: roughly 10–15 days
- Heavy daily use: 30 days or more, with documented cases beyond that
Treat these as rough guidance, not a countdown. Individual variation is wide enough that no one can tell you a safe date. Other sample types differ: blood and saliva have much shorter windows, hair testing a much longer one.
No product, drink, supplement or "detox" kit reliably accelerates clearance. Products sold on that promise are not supported by evidence.
"But it's legal" is not a defence
Legality and employment policy are separate questions, and people conflate them constantly.
The Department of Transportation's guidance for safety-sensitive employees is unambiguous: "CBD use is not a legitimate medical explanation for a laboratory-confirmed marijuana positive result." A Medical Review Officer will verify the positive regardless of what you say you took.
The same logic applies to hemp-derived delta-8 and delta-9. Buying a product legally in your state does not obligate an employer to accept it as an explanation, and most policies prohibit a result, not a substance.
If you are subject to testing
Assume any intoxicating hemp product will show up. Delta-8, delta-9, THCA, HHC, THCP — treat them all as testable. This includes THC gummies, vapes, flower and seltzers.
If you want CBD, use isolate or broad-spectrum, and verify the batch COA shows THC as non-detect. Not "below 0.3%" — non-detect.
Do not rely on marketing language. "Won't show up on a drug test," "THC-free" and "federally legal" are claims, not test results. The COA is the test result.
Understand the stakes before you decide. Safety-sensitive job, professional licence, probation, custody proceeding — the honest advice in those situations is to abstain entirely. No product is worth that outcome, and no review site can promise you otherwise.
The Bottom Line
Hemp-derived THC is chemically the same molecule your body processes into the same metabolite that drug tests are built to find. The research shows immunoassays detect delta-8, delta-10 and HHC metabolites alongside delta-9. Full-spectrum CBD has produced positives after a single exposure in controlled study conditions. Federal regulators have stated plainly that CBD use will not excuse a positive result.
If you are tested, the only reliable protection is not using intoxicating hemp products at all, and choosing verified isolate or broad-spectrum if you use CBD.
