Every Cannabinoid on the Market, Explained

Five years ago a hemp label said CBD. Today it might say D8, D9, D10, THCP, HHC, HHCP, CBN, CBG, CBC, CBDV, THCV or some blend of six of them, often with no explanation of what any of it means.

This is a reference page. Each entry covers what the cannabinoid is, whether the plant makes it or a chemist does, what it is generally reported to do, and — the part usually left out — how much research actually exists.

First, the distinction that matters most

Cannabinoids sold today fall into three groups, and knowing which one you are holding tells you more than any product description.

Naturally abundant. The plant produces meaningful quantities: CBD, THCA, delta-9 THC, CBG in some cultivars. These have the most research behind them.

Naturally present in trace amounts. The plant makes a little — CBN, CBC, THCV, CBDV — but commercial quantities usually come from conversion or concentration, because extracting the natural amount is uneconomic.

Converted or semi-synthetic. Made by chemically altering CBD in a lab: delta-8, delta-10, HHC, THC-O, THCP as sold commercially, and most of the newer acronyms. The starting material is hemp, but the molecule reaching you was assembled through a chemical reaction.

That third category is where both the regulatory pressure and the safety gap sit. Conversion uses acids and solvents, and the reaction produces byproducts that standard potency testing does not look for. This is a large part of why the 2026 federal change excludes cannabinoids "synthesized or manufactured outside the plant" — and why residual solvent testing matters so much on these products specifically.

The THC family

Delta-9 THC

Natural. The primary intoxicating compound in cannabis and the reference point for everything else on this page. Decades of research, and by far the best-characterised cannabinoid in the category. In hemp products it appears within the 0.3% dry-weight limit — which in a large gummy still allows a full 10 mg dose. See our comparison of THCA vs delta-9.

THCA

Natural. The acidic precursor the living plant actually produces — raw cannabis is largely THCA, not THC. It is not intoxicating in its raw form. Heat converts it to delta-9 THC, which is the whole mechanism behind smoking or vaping THCA flower. Legally it has been the basis of the hemp flower market, on the argument that unheated flower tests under 0.3% delta-9. The 2026 federal change counts THCA toward the total, closing that.

Delta-8 THC

Converted. Occurs naturally only in trace amounts; commercial delta-8 is made from CBD. Generally reported as milder than delta-9 with less anxiety at comparable doses, though that comparison rests mostly on user reports rather than controlled study. It is the most widely sold converted cannabinoid and the most widely banned at state level.

Delta-10 THC

Converted. Also made from CBD. Usually described as lighter and more stimulating than delta-8. Very little formal research exists; almost everything published about its effects is anecdotal.

THCP

Natural in trace amounts; commercially converted. Identified in 2019. Its longer alkyl side chain binds far more strongly to the CB1 receptor than delta-9 — laboratory work has reported binding affinity many times higher. That is why blended products list it in single-digit milligram amounts.

Worth saying plainly: THCP was discovered recently, human research is minimal, and a product listing 3 mg of THCP alongside 25 mg of delta-9 may feel considerably stronger than the total suggests. If you are new to a blend containing it, treat the labelled milligrams as an underestimate.

THCV

Natural in trace amounts. Structurally similar to delta-9 but with a shorter side chain. Interesting to researchers because its effects appear dose-dependent in unusual ways. Frequently marketed with appetite-related claims that outrun the available evidence, which is preliminary.

THC-O acetate

Fully synthetic. An acetate ester with no natural occurrence, produced using acetic anhydride. It has drawn specific safety concern regarding what happens when acetate esters are heated and inhaled — a mechanism raised in connection with lung injury from other acetate compounds. It is excluded from hemp under the federal change and banned in many states. We would not recommend it.

The hydrogenated family

HHC

Semi-synthetic. Hexahydrocannabinol — THC with hydrogen added across a double bond, the same basic chemistry as hydrogenating a vegetable oil. Commercial HHC is a mixture of two forms, only one of which is meaningfully active, which is a large part of why potency varies so much between products. Reported as roughly comparable to delta-9 or somewhat milder. Research is thin.

HHCP

Semi-synthetic. The hydrogenated analogue of THCP. Essentially no published research. Sold on the strength of the acronym.

The non-intoxicating cannabinoids

CBD

Natural, abundant. The most researched cannabinoid after delta-9, and the only one with an FDA-approved prescription drug behind it (for specific seizure disorders). Non-intoxicating. Note that CBD can interact with prescription medications through the same liver enzyme pathway that grapefruit affects — a genuine consideration worth raising with a pharmacist. CBG

Natural. Often called the mother cannabinoid, because CBGA is the precursor the plant converts into THCA and CBDA. Mature plants contain very little, so CBG products come from specially bred cultivars or early harvest, which is why they cost more. Non-intoxicating. Research is early-stage.

CBN

Natural, formed by degradation. What THC becomes as it oxidises with age and light exposure — old cannabis is high in CBN. Marketed heavily for sleep. The evidence for a sedative effect from CBN alone is weaker than the marketing implies; some researchers attribute the sleepiness to accompanying compounds. Mildly intoxicating at high doses.

CBC

Natural, minor. Non-intoxicating, appears in small amounts, usually included as part of a full-spectrum blend rather than sold alone. Limited research.

CBDV

Natural, minor. A structural analogue of CBD. Non-intoxicating. Under investigation for neurological applications; nothing established for consumer use.

Reading a blended label

Blends are now the norm rather than the exception, and the total milligram figure on the front is often the least useful number on the package.

A gummy listing 12.5 mg delta-8, 12.5 mg delta-9 and 2 mg THCP is not a 27 mg product in any meaningful sense. THCP binds far more strongly than the others, so the small number does disproportionate work. Blends are also where potency varies most between brands, because the ratios differ and there is no standard.

Two practical rules. First, if a product contains a cannabinoid you have not tried, treat it as new regardless of the total milligrams — start low and wait. Second, check the COA for residual solvents specifically on anything containing converted cannabinoids, because that is the testing panel that speaks to how the conversion was done.

What the 2026 federal change does to this list

The new federal hemp definition excludes cannabinoids not naturally produced by the plant, and caps finished products at 0.4 mg total THC per container. Delta-8, delta-10, HHC, HHCP, THC-O and commercially produced THCP all fall outside it. THCA counts toward the total THC calculation, which removes THCA flower.

Which cannabinoids are natural and which are made in a lab?

CBD, delta-9 THC, THCA and CBG occur naturally in meaningful amounts. CBN, CBC, THCV and CBDV occur naturally in trace amounts. Delta-8, delta-10, HHC, HHCP, THC-O and commercial THCP are produced by chemically converting CBD.

Which is the strongest cannabinoid?

By receptor binding affinity, THCP is far stronger than delta-9 — which is why it appears in single-digit milligram amounts in blends. It also has the least human research behind it.

Is CBN good for sleep?

CBN is heavily marketed for sleep, but evidence for a sedative effect from CBN alone is weaker than the marketing suggests. Some researchers attribute the effect to other compounds present alongside it.

Are converted cannabinoids safe?

The honest answer is that there is not enough research to say. The conversion process uses acids and solvents and can leave byproducts that standard potency testing does not detect, which is why residual solvent testing matters most on these products.
