Where OG Kush came from, and why nobody agrees
OG Kush is the most influential name in modern cannabis and the one with the least settled paperwork. It sits behind an enormous share of the American catalogue — GSC, the entire Skywalker and Alien line, most of what gets called "gas" — and yet its own origin is still argued over three decades on. Even the initials are contested: Ocean Grown, Original Gangster, take your pick depending on who is telling it.
Leafly classifies it as a hybrid and its genealogy display lists Chemdawg and Hindu Kush as the parents. That is an industry account, not genetic authentication, and this guide leaves the cross unresolved rather than presenting a display as a settled pedigree. The honest position is that OG Kush is a name a great many growers have used for a great many related plants, and the paperwork never caught up.
What it smells like
Pine and earth, with the fuel note underneath that the whole "gas" vocabulary was invented to describe. It is a heavier, more resinous smell than the fruit-forward strains that came after it, and it is the reason OG descendants are still the benchmark for anyone who wants their flower to smell like something other than candy.

Our retail partners listed seven products (four at CBD.co, two at LooperVerse and one at CBDfx) carrying the name when we checked on 28 September 2026 — from JustCBD, CBDfx, Apothecary Rx and Looper — across disposables, cartridges, vape juice and tinctures. None of them is flower: each carries an OG Kush-style terpene blend rather than the plant itself, and none is sold as verified OG Kush genetics.
The December problem, in one paragraph
Almost every jar of "OG Kush-style" hemp flower on sale in the United States is sold as THCA flower, and THCA flower has a deadline on it. Section 781 of Public Law 119-37 rewrote the federal hemp definition to measure total THC rather than delta-9 alone, and total THC counts the THCA sitting in the bud. That single word removes essentially all THCA flower from the federal hemp category.
The date is contested and we hedge it deliberately. Our reading of the statute puts the total-THC standard at 11 December 2026, because Section 2019 of Public Law 119-103 delayed most of the rewrite to that date. A substantial body of law firms reads it as 12 November 2026. Several states bite earlier still. Our standing advice has not changed: plan for 12 November and treat 11 December as upside. Names and distinctions
Two letters are not a provenance record. OG appears in dozens of strain names and most of them are not documented OG Kush descendants — the letters have been marketing shorthand for "strong and gassy" for twenty years. Skywalker OG and Alien OG both sit in the family by reputation; neither arrives with a pedigree you can audit.
When you are comparing records, keep the whole designation. A prefix, a suffix or a named cut usually identifies something more specific than the bare name, and dropping it is how two different plants end up filed under one heading. The alias worth knowing for this profile is Premium OG Kush.
